Central High School, the second oldest public high school in America, is an academic force to be reckoned with. This magnet public school was chartered in 1836 as an all male institution. On opening day in 1838, the all male institution boasted 63 students and 4 teachers. Over 170 years later, Central has 2,400 students and 130 teachers, with 99% of its faculty having achieved a masters degree.

Central has graduated more classes than any school in America. Its standard of excellence has prompted 98% of its graduates to continually matriculate at four-year colleges and universities.

In 1984, the birth of a co-educational Central arrived. Today, Central High School stands almost equally male and female in a highly accepting diverse culture, with students from various ethnicities, neighborhoods and socio-economic levels. This mosaic and true mirror of society has strengthened Central's tradition of excellence and promoted an increased atmosphere of cooperation and learning.
